360 and LiDAR Capture of Medical Device Plant and Utility Rooms

Asset Visulisation
LiDAR Capture

Location: Waterford, Ireland
Facility Type: Contact Lens Manufacturing
Areas Scanned: Utility & Plant Rooms
Capture methods: Ultra-high-resolution 360 ° imagery + precision LiDAR scanning
Project date: 2024

PlantQuest, in partnership with Murphy Geospatial, scanned the utility and plant room on a large contact lens manufacturing campus, creating an immersive 360 °/LiDAR digital twin inside the existing OneView platform. Engineers and ERT teams can now toggle from 2D maps to photo-real scenes in one click, locate tagged assets with millimeter accuracy, and plan work remotely—cutting site inspections and audits by up to 60 % while eliminating blind spots and escort hours.

The Challenge Faced

  • Blind spots: Due to the very nature and complexity of the sites utility and plant rooms, critical services hide in congested mezzanines, voids and cable trays. Due to this, planners relied on guesswork and site walks into the field when planning even the simplest tasks.
  • Inefficient inspections: Routine audits and contractor briefings meant donning PPE and escorting visitors through multiple controlled areas—time-consuming and disruptive.
  • Out-of-date drawings: Brownfield modifications outpaced as-built updates; with the sites 2D schematics no longer reflected reality, risking clashes and re-work.
  • The Solution

  • Immersive digital twin – the plant and utility spaces across the site were captured in with 360° imagery and perfectly aligned with sub-centimetre LiDAR point clouds.
  • Seamless 2D ↔ 360 ° navigation – users can now toggle from the familiar OneView and 2D map interface to a room-level 360 enviroments in a single click, then back again.
  • Factory-in-the-boardroom – maintenance, engineering and safety teams walk the spaces virtually, annotate equipment, and brief contractors without setting foot on site.
  • Future-proof data – full point-cloud files are now stored for clash detection, engineering works and design reviews helping to expedite project planning and execustion.
  • Outcome & Impact

    • Up to 60 % faster inspections and audits—engineers can now resolve many queries remotely, visiting only when hands-on work is required.
    • Smarter asset planning—teams verify clearance, lifting paths and tie-ins in the digital twin, cutting re-work and surprises during shutdowns.
    • Reduced escorts and PPE hours—contractors receive virtual walk-throughs, arriving on site already familiar with layouts and hazards.
